Josephine Catapano, 93, Scarsdale Perfumer
SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Josephine Catapano, a nationally recognized perfumer who lived in Scarsdale, died May 14. She was 93. Catapano worked as a perfumer or "nose," designing fragrances for companies including Estee Lauder and Shiseido. Born Dec. 29, 1918, she grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and graduated from Hunter High School and Hunter College. Known as one of the first American woman perfumers of note, Catapano designed Estee Lauder's Youth Dew and JHL, Guy Laroche's Fidji, Norell's Norell and Shiseido's Zen. A longtime executive at International Flavors and Fragrances, she received the Cosmetic Career Women's Award in 1980 and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Society of Perfumers in 1993. She was predeceased by two brothers, Patrick and John. She is survived by a sister, Carmella; a sister-in-law, Rosemarie; and many nephews and nieces. |
