Here’s the good news: wrinkles aren’t actually the main culprit when it comes to looking older. Here’s the bad news: uneven skin tone is. In other words, according to new research we have been wasting time and untold amounts of money worrying about those pesky “pleats” in our skin alone. Dr Bernhard Fink, an evolutionary biologist at the University of Göttingen, Germany, who has been working with Procter & Gamble for six years on studies into attractiveness, says: “When we singled out the effect of skin coloration on our perception of female faces, we found that the evenness of colour was significant in judging age. The range in age perception, just caused by the variation in uneven skin tone, was up to 10 years.” “Close up, skin colour is made of small dots, like an impressionist painting,” explains Edouard Mauvais-Jarvis, scientific communications director at Dior. “But when skin ages, the dots tend to separate from each other in colour and shade. Some tend to be darker than others, leaving an impression of unevenness. This unevenness brings a slightly dirty, shadowy and dull aspect to the complexion that is interpreted by our brain as a sign of ageing.” |
