Polo: Zacara defeats Lechuza Caracas to win 108th US Open tournament
&Mdash; Zacara knocked off defending champion Lechuza Caracas 10-8 to win the Nespresso 108th U.S. Open Polo Tournament Sunday at International Polo Club Palm Beach. Making its first appearance in the championship final, Zacara (6-0) was the only team in the 11-team tournament field to finish undefeated. Lechuza Caracas, returning to the finals for just the second time in the past 10 years, finished 5-2. "I know that feeling," said disheartened Lechuza Caracas player-patron Victor Vargas as he watched Zacara celebrate. Zacara, the 2011 British Open champion, was led by former American 10-goaler Mike Azzaro, named Most Valuable Player after dominating the game on both ends of the field and showing flashes of his days as a 10-goaler. Azzaro, now rated at seven goals, led Zacara with four goals and finished the tournament with 13. But it was his defensive play that shone, turning back several scoring attempts and defending 10-goalers Sapo Caset and Juan Martin Nero. |
